Diagnosis for my 12 yo daughter

Hi All

I have just joined this site and am looking for some advice.

I think my daughter may be autistic - she has many of the signs I have read about and really finds social situations and school especially very challenging.

I have heard that the NHS route for diagnosis can take a very long time - does anyone know if there is an online assessment that could be used to provide a quicker diagnosis, and is there anything that is 'medically' recognised of this nature?

Thanks in advance - any guidance much appreciated

  • You’re very welcome. I’m glad I could help a little.

i agree that it’s hugely frustrating there isn’t an official online tool for families to kick-start/expedite the process. With all the developments in AI and machine learning, maybe one day there will be! xx

  • Nessie - thanks for your amazing reply. I really have taken lots of positives from your journey!

I will push my GP - shame there isn't an online recognised diagnostic test though as would be much quicker and easier!!

    Thanks again - love & light x

  • Hello,

I wrote a letter to my GP and enclosed a copy of my results from this test: https://www.autismresearchcentre.com/arc_tests (one of the country's leading research centres), and then made an appointment to see her to pursue a referral. It took around 9-10 months altogether as an adult, but I'm not sure how much it differs for children, and will probably vary depending on your CCG/where you live.

All I would say is please, please do persevere and get her the help she needs. You will come across people who were diagnosed as adults and wish it could have been picked up sooner. I can see now that my childhood was very detrimental to the rest of my family's wellbeing and I also suffered a number of sexual assaults etc. as a teenager because I couldn't imagine people had different intentions to me and I couldn't perceive the risks in certain situations. I've since spent a lot of time and money on counselling trying to understand why my parents didn't protect me, but they simply didn't know anything about autism so it's not really fair to blame them.

Your daughter is incredibly fortunate to have such a proactive mummy in her corner.

Sorry I can't be more help. I wish you and your family all the love and strength in the world as you go through this process.
