1 year old - autism

Please help. I’m feeling desperately sad at the moment.

my son is nearly 1. He was Very behind at his 10 month check with regards to his social and communication skills. This has confirmed what I already feared - that he could be autistic.
His symptoms are hand flapping and twirling, not responding, not pointing, not engaging in play with anyone else etc.
he has been a difficult baby for many reasons - not sleeping, crying a lot, not wanting to be laid down, very serious and impossible to make laugh - to name a few.
the HV has told me there is nothing anyone will do until he is at least 2.
what do I do?
Anyone else have these symptoms at such a young age?
Help. I just want the best for my boy!

  • Hi,

I also have an 11 month old who sounds very much like your boy too. I already have a 2yr old with severe autism. I’m 99.9% sure we are going down the same road again. With my 11month old T, we have the hand flapping, hand twirling, lack of response to calling his name, he has absolutely no babble at all, he doesn’t wave or point, he stands on tip toes, cries all the time, doesn’t sleep, doesn’t play with toys in the usual way (spins wheels over and over etc) and he moves very very slowly, almost in slow motion...the list goes on. So similarities there with your little man. Does he babble? I think this one is the most worrying for me.

My older Son has portage and a keyworker etc and they’ve both said, yes absolutely start the process of getting T seen, the earlier the better. Like you though, nothing will be done until he is at least 2. The one thing I can do is self refer him to portage myself. Can you do this in your area? If you can I would do this. I’m doing this because they can come and do a check list and then at least see if they’re developing like a neurotypical child. It’s a start. If they’re not they can start working with them and the earlier, the better. That wait between when you start to worry and when they can be seen by a pediatrician feels like forever.

With my 2 year old, he suffered a huge rapid regression at 17 months, because of this the process started there and then. The wait to be seen was 7 months but he had a diagnosis of ASD a week before his second birthday.

If you can, refer to portage yourself, see your GP and push for them to put in a referral. If it gets to the time of the appointment and he’s come along and you’re no longer worried then brilliant, and you can cancel it and they’ll give the appointment to someone else. Start it now though.

Try not to worry, I know it’s difficult but everything will be ok no matter what happens x

  • Hi

i was wondering how your son is getting on? My boy is 18months now and there is still no improvement in terms of hitting his milestones. If anything I think he has regressed.
Still no words, little eye contact, playing alone, barely engages with us or anyone, he points but not for attention, no waving etc

we saw a paediatrician but were told to come back in 7 months. I don’t get why we have to wait so long when it’s so bloody obvious.
There is nothing local in the area to help us before any diagnosis unfortunately.

    regards

  • Thank you so much for the reply. I am going out of my mind - fear of the unknown I suppose.

He makes a lot of noises. A month ago he was saying ‘gaga, dada’ but this has stopped and now he just makes noises - more like outbursts. He also rolls his tongue a lot.

I believe that he would answer to his name sometimes before too, but this has completely stopped now. I can’t get his attention in anyway.

Physically he is ok. Started crawling at 9 months and can pull himself up etc.

I think I will make an app with the GP this week although I’m not sure it will do any good.

I haven’t heard of portage. I’ve just started googling any support agencies etc in order to get some advise. Even without a diagnosis I hope that they will be able to help with some of my questions like how I can support my son and communicate with him etc

    Thanks again x
