Coats etc

My son really hates wearing anything that covers his elbows.  We are just about there with the summer to Autumn long sleeved tees and jumpers transition but having real screaming meltdown battles with coats.  Just worried about the weather getting colder. He loves the outdoors but gloves hats scarf all get thrown off.  He seems to find the big puffy coats particularly uncomfortable.  It's hard because you can't just buy a few different ones and experiment. Too expensive.  Particularly keen to hear from those with ASD and sensory issues or parents that have been through it. Any ideas on a coat we may be successful with?

  • I'm fairly sure if you can layer up his torso with maybe a micro fleece then t-shirt and body warmer he'll be fine on most days. His arms and hands will get chilled but as long as his actual body temperature is fine he won't get hypothermic and it's not that uncommon to see even in very cold weather now most people are jumping in and out off cars all day long so might not get too many raised eyebrows?

  • Well hope for us yet, just another 3 winters to get through! He doesn't really understand about choosing as yet, especially not with clothes. I was thinking about getting a fleece and a gilet for now which would leave his arms a bit less constricted.  Or maybe a fleece and a lightweight raincoat. Would 2 layers be worse though?

  • I've been through this with my ds (6) we are currently at the other end of the spectrum whereby I've insists on wearing woolly gloves and hats all year round!

What worked for us was taking him shopping and letting him pick the coat? It wasnt my favourite day tbh and I didn't 'approve' of his choice BUT he wore it happily!!!
