8 year old just been diagnosed

Hi.

I’m new to this.... my 8 year old son has just got his ADOS diagnosis through today. I have been waiting 18 months for this (well, I’ve been waiting about 5 years to try to get to the bottom of why he does some of the things he does). I wanted him to be diagnosed because it explains everything. I would have been terribly worried if he hadn’t been diagnosed because what would this mean for his future and how does this explain his behaviour? I love him so much and many features of his autism are the things I love most about him. He is sweet, kind, caring and very close to me.

so why am I now so upset that it’s been made official? I really don’t get this!

xx

  • Just to be clear, I don't have an autistic child (I'm on this forum as I'm awaiting my own autism assessment), but it seems these feelings are very common. Try reading 'My son's not Rainman' by John Williams - it's a true story and the dad strikes a lovely balance between the funny/quirky stories about his son, along with the challenging moments they experience. He also explores the feelings of sadness after the diagnosis (despite fighting for one) and shares his experience of coming to terms with the diagnosis.

You sound like a lovely, caring parent, so don't beat yourself up about the way you feel. Best wishes to you and your son.
