Diagnosed or Not?

Hello all

This time last year I finally heard from the doctor that my son has high functioning autism and sensory processing disorder. She wrote to me and confirmed this, as he was due to start secondary school in September I sent a copy of the letter to the new school. Since then nothing has happened. Is this normal? I have had to chat to the school a couple of times over various things but they seem reluctant to get SENCO involved? Has he not actually been diagnosed and I have it wrong?

  • Hello, We have been told that our 12 year old son has high functioning autism and sensory processing disorder, we have a long wait for him to get diagnoses , but they have said this is most probably what we are looking at.  We have had a nightmare with the first year of secondary school basically the whole of year 7 was a write off, he couldn’t cope with the noise, large groups of people and making new friends, it was so hard for him, his anxiety was so bad he would swing his arms and clap his hands and would rock side to side and he was aware that other children were looking at him, so he completely stopped going to school. I’m not sure what’s going to happen in year 8.

  • We went to the doctors first but now we have seen a physiologist and he is now waiting to see the paediatrician.
