Diagnosed or Not?

Hello all

This time last year I finally heard from the doctor that my son has high functioning autism and sensory processing disorder. She wrote to me and confirmed this, as he was due to start secondary school in September I sent a copy of the letter to the new school. Since then nothing has happened. Is this normal? I have had to chat to the school a couple of times over various things but they seem reluctant to get SENCO involved? Has he not actually been diagnosed and I have it wrong?

From what you are saying, I'm not clear whether your son has a formal diagnosis or not.

Post-diagnosis can be a very nervous time for any parent, but we're here to help you. In this link you can find information on the effects on your family, getting some practical support as well as telling your child about their diagnosis: https://www.autism.org.uk/about/diagnosis/children/recently-diagnosed.aspx

If you have any other questions about diagnosis, or wanted some advice, you may like to contact our Autism Helpline team. They can provide you with information and advice on your issue. You can call them on 0808 800 4104 (Monday to Thursday 10am to 4pm, Friday 9am to 3pm).The Helpline is often very busy and it may take a couple of attempts before you get through to speak to an advisor.

With regards to your son's education, the following article contains a lot of helpful information about education for a child with an autism:http://www.autism.org.uk/about/in-education.aspx. This includes information regarding getting extra support for your child in their education setting.

You may want to contact our Education Rights Service who provides information, support and advice on educational provision and entitlements. Please see the following link for further information: http://www.autism.org.uk/services/helplines/education-rights.aspx.

    I hope that may help.
