5 year old son with ASD is violent.

Hi, 

Our 5 year old son was non-verbal up until 2 years ago and since then he very slowly and gradually built up words with the help of Makaton. He is occasionally using sentences but his speech is still delayed.

We have had issues with him being violent for quite a few years now and we thought it was frustration due to being unable to communicate. As time is going on he is more able to communicate his wants and needs etc with us but will still hit, kick, scratch and sometimes bite myself, his dad and his older brother. 

Has anyone dealt with this kind of behaviour before, if so, how were you able to manage this?

    My daughter is 8 and still waiting for assessment, she is prone to violent outbursts but hers are a direct response to masking all day at school or her stim routine being interrupted. 

    On the occasion that it is triggered at home we look at what was happening previously was she over/under stimulated? Was something causing issues with her senses? Then we try and remove or at least minimise the problem. We have a safe space for her with sensory toys and pillows to hit as well as stress balls to dig her nails into.
