How and when are you told that your child does (or doesn’t) have ASD?

My daughter had a day of assessments, while I was questioned, but they weren’t sure sure whether she was masking or not, as she does it brilliantly for her age.

She was called back recently for another assessment of 90 minutes, while I was again answering more childhood questions, and going over what daily life is like for her.

We’ve been asked to attend a feedback meeting with two Doctors. Is this the diagnosis stage?

  • I went part through this process over the past nine months as an adult:-

    1.  Initial GP referral.

    2.  Telephone interview.

    3.  What they called a screening meeting - contradiction to what everyone else can see and the two 90 minute sessions on their website.

    4.  What is the supposed Full assessment (a number of sessions for tests) - NHS says no.

    The Screening session does not work for someone with Aspergers who has built up masking/coping mechanisms when the person does not fully communicate ALL the differences that they know/do not know.

    If others see the behaviours/traits of the condition that "do not have the right qualification" are ignored - it is only a piece of paper (a degree in history does not mean you have the full background to become a politician).

    Therefore like me, you cannot understand the contradictions then you have to keep going if you want that diagnosis yet that decision to be diagnosed/not is up to you.
