How can a diagnosis help

Hello I'm new on here and I am in need of some advise. My son is 9 yrs old and is going through the process of assessments that will hopefully lead to a diagnosis of autism. How will this diagnosis help us in choosing his secondary school in the next school year? Any advise is welcome as he is our oldest so we haven't been through the process of choosing a secondary school yet.

You might want to look at our page here on the NAS site 'After Diagnosis' - https://www.autism.org.uk/about/diagnosis/children/recently-diagnosed.aspx - which contains information for parents of recently diagnosed children, and the page on extra help for your child in school - https://www.autism.org.uk/about/in-education/extra-help-in-school.aspx - which covers assessing your child's needs with their school, putting plans in place, your rights as a parent etc. It might be worth discussing with prospective schools for your son what kind of SEN support they provide, and what support they offer for children on the ASD spectrum particularly.
