Getting my son statemented

Hello,

My son has finally been diagnosed with ASD after best part of a year of waiting.

My son is 4 years old, and will be starting primary school in Sept next year.

I have been told by his current pre school (where he has a one to one support worker) that in order to get the same support at big school, he needs to be statemented to allow for funding to be applied for. So he is ready with the required support when he starts primary school.

However when speaking to the Dr who just confirmed the diagnosis, she said they don't get statemented this young, I have to wait until he starts primary school. And I quote 'When they highlight a problem, the statement can be sought then'.

I don't understand this, and am struggling to believe it can be true. Why would they wait for a child who has been diagnosed with ASD to start struggling at school before doing anything? When I put the question to the Dr she merely shrugged and said thats how it is.

Help!!

  • Hi CK - I wd check out info on this site about statementing/education.  I think there's another site called IPSEA which shd be helpful as well.   I wd definitely query what the Dr sd.  Must have hit you like a bolt out of the blue.  I may be out of date...... it's quite a long time ago now.... but my son had his statement by his 4th yr + went to an autism specific school.  Hope others can be of help on this site + you get things sorted. bw
