Disciplining 7 year old son - strategy for teachers

Just had parents evening. My 7 year old is in year 2 in mainstream. Teacher said finds it hard to sit on mat. Also talks to much.  She told him off today.

when we got home my son had a major meltdown and said hates teacher and school. I think teacher tries hard but I’d like to point her in the direction of resources about disciplining autistic kids. My son can’t chat and disrupt the class but equally telling him off in front of his friends when he has difficulty controlling emotions, doesn’t work either. Perhaps a non verbal sign ?

thanks,

TJ

  • My non asd daughter is in year 2 and cannot sit still or stop talking when sitting on the carpet at school, her teachers are reluctant to tell her of to much as they are aware her older sister shouts her down alot at home so school is an outlet for her. They use a card system to quiet her but direct it at the whole class if teacher puts green card on the board class volume is fine, amber they need to be a bit quieter and red means silence. This prompts her without singling her out. I don't know if something like that could work for your son? In contrast my 8 year old daughter in year 3 who is being assessed for asd sits beautifully and silently on the carpet at school and always has as she will not go against her rigid idea of how you must act In school! In fact she has meltdowns at home when other children talk over the teacher as it's wrong!
