Family Support Worker- advice please.

Hi,

has as anyone been referred by their child’s school to a Family Support Worker?

My son has ASD, he is only 4 but he’s very hands on with his sister (1 yo) and myself.  He also hurts children and adults at school sometimes.  I have on a couple of occasions, ended up in tears at school when I’ve had a bad morning with him and he’s been particularly hands on with me.  The teacher has now said she would like to refer us to Family Support Worker to make sure we’re all getting the support we need, but I can’t help thinking they just think I can’t cope and I’m im not bringing him up right.

can anyone shed some light on what it’s all about please and if they’ve helped you and what with?

thanks xx

  • I think we have all been there at some point (I know I have!) my daughter is 8 with undiagnosed asd and severe sleep problems we are lucky to get 3 hours a night! So I always worried that school would think I was not coping as I was always exhausted but I really found talking helped I declined support worker for nearly 5 years and was never judged for it. It is ok to ask for help or even just someone to talk to, that said this forum is great for support and feel free to message any time

    Good luck x

  • Thank you for your reply.  My mind has been put at ease.  I must admit I have turned up at school recently and told them he’s had a bad morning and burst into tears from the stress of having to deal with him hitting me and pulling my hair etc, and my daughter.  So I think they’re worried about me, but I don’t want them to think I can’t cope or look after him, I’m just very down at the moment.

  • I was referred to family support services to try and help get diagnosis for my daughter. I was really worried about it as had had bad experience with social services years ago and I thought this would be the same. I am very happy to say I was wrong.

What our family support worker did was spend time talking to me first about what I wanted and what I felt was putting strain on us she then spoke to the kids ( not sure if this would apply to you where yours are so young) she then spoke to all professionals involved in our case school and school nurses as well as anxiety counsellor then came back to me with all their input and told me about all local services (didn't have to take them) she also organises regular meetings with all people involved with the children so everyone is on the same page with everyone doing what they said they would.

I have a deep mistrust of social workers for many reasons and the medical profession for the way they handled my daughter, but I can honestly say that the family support worker has been great. Best thing is that it is voluntary so if I decide I don't want her input anymore then I no longer have to have it.
