CAHMS appointment

After 17 years of WHY, IF, WHERE' WHEN. and WHO we've finally got an appointment with CAHMS in Keighley, North Yorkshire. It has taken 16 turbulent years but now, as parents, we can appreciate what has being going on with our daughter. Hence the reason we have eventually got this appointment so that hopefully she can be assessed, diagnosed with ASD or whatever the problem may be. All we want is strategies put into place so that she can eventually lead a normal life and eventually work at her chosen career. Without  getting the right help, I fear my daughter will never be able to hold her own with social situations.

My reason for this post is I am unsure what to expect at this appointment. I have typed out details of my daughters life since birth, have copy of symptoms that were given to doctor for referral and hopefully with have copy of EHCP which we are applying for. Is there anything else I need? She is being seen by a psychiatric nurse, will she be able to tell us there and then what diagnosis it? Will she have to go back again? My daughter is not good at expressing herself will she understand this? etc

I would dearly love to know so that I can prepare my daughter. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there

If you are going for an assessment for ASD specifically maybe just tell your daughter that someone is going to have a chat with you and see if they can help her to feel better / understand why she feels like she does.

I think with a CAMHS based assessment they will have you both in the room and will have a conversation with your daughter, ask how she is feeling, what her interests are, friendships etc they will also be watching body language and actually what you say about her struggling to express herself may be something they will find significant.

If however your appointment is just an initial discussion with CAMHS to get your daughter into the system you may not get a diagnosis straight away as they sometimes do a referral to a specialist team. It just depends who you are seeing on this first visit.
