My son is in mainstream year 5 and clinging on by a thread, they’ve been fantastic and he has an EHCP and a full time 1-1. He’d not be in education without it. But they can no longer cope and no further measures can be put in place. He’s already pretty much segregated and doesn’t follow the curriculum at all. The other parents are starting to mutiny about him being there because he’s a ‘thrower’ when he has a meltdown and the other children aren’t safe.
We were given a list of schools and told to name one, we did this but were told he was too high functioning academically to go there and to look again, they recommended he go to a local secondary with a hub where he’ll be expected to survive without a 1-1 and navigate his way around unsupervised. He can’t manage this at primary! I feel he’s too ‘low functioning’ socially to go there. Back to square one! Today I get a call saying they can’t keep him there any longer and they want him to transfer to a local primary with a autism hub ASAP for his final year...when I looked the kids are in a mainstream classroom without a 1-1(ratio was 5:8) and expected to ‘fit in’. He’s struggling already with 100% full on support. They’ve also recommended a very old fashioned school for boys with behavioural issues for senior school. I’ve had a look and it’s basically a residential unit. No mention of autism on the info so again, not right for him.
I just don’t feel like there’s a place for him anywhere. Socially very low functioning but academically bright(but under achieving). :( Do these places even exist?
