6 year old changed character

Hi,

We have been having issues with my autistic son who has just turned six. He has always been fairly calm and my wife and I have been able to reason with him. However in the last few weeks his behaviour has gone out of control and he is acting totally out of character at home and at school. He has started doing the following:

1) Screaming as loudly as he can in public and in peoples faces

2) Hitting things

3) Pinching and biting for no reason

4) Not listening

Nothing has changed so we don’t know what has gone wrong

Damien

  • there was an article the other day in the Daily Mail about sudden changes in a childs behaviour screaming / anger issues / separation anxiety / and it was put down to strep infections messing with brain activity has your son had any throat infections ? apparently a course of antibiotics cleared the problem within hours of talking medication im probably way off and don't want to cause alarm but what you described made me think of that article anyway worth mentioning i hope you find the cause of your sons problem

  • Hi Damien,

You might be interested in having a look at some of the information pages here on the NAS site. We have a section relating to behavioral issues here - https://www.autism.org.uk/about/behaviour.aspx that links to various different types of advice: the Sensory Differences, Top Tips and Meltdowns pages in particular sound like they might be of some help as they go into detail about some of the potential causes of challenging behaviour in children, and strategies for coping with difficult behaviour and trying to contain outbursts when they happen.

    Best wishes,
