My son is in Year 1 at a small private school in the South East area. He has autism but is very bright (eg he can count in multiples of 60s, always gets full marks on spelling etc). The key issue is that he is stubborn and wants to do everything on his terms and has behaviour issues, especially when he is bored or an activity he hates (eg drama).
We have been having issues with the school recently with them now saying they don’t think it’s the right setting. Part of me thinks the school has insufficient experience and do not want to handle it, as there are only 12 children in his class and they have both a teacher and a TA. Though I do understand his behaviour is tricky at times. The school are now saying that his behaviour is impacting the others and their behaviour is now worsening. Most of the parents are really nice and they have no issues about my son.
We don’t know what to do. We don’t want him to go to a specialist school as all the ones in the area are mainly for kids with learning difficulties but my son is the other way round - very clever and gets bored when not pushed. My son also hates large crowds, and has large sensory issues in these scenarios, so the local state schools with class sizes of 30 and 90-120 kids per year are not really going to be appropriate.
We applied for an EHCP but this is proving tricky / a long process as we live in a different borough to the school.
Does anyone have any advice. We really do not know what to do.
