Diagnosis today.

Hi there,

my little man was officially diagnosed as being autistic today. He is approaching 10. I thought that it wouldn't make a difference to be told he has autism but I feel like I am in shock. It is a mix between being relieved and sad. Please tell me that I am not the only one to experience these emotions? Feeling a bit lost at the moment.

    You are not alone. We see parents come here all the time having just discovered their child's diagnosis; it's not unusual at all to feel overwhelmed and confused. You have probably been told this already, but it bears repeating; the diagnosis has not changed your son at all, he is still the beautiful little man that you have always loved. In time, the diagnosis will help both you and him to make wiser decisions, but for now, do be kind to yourself and allow yourself to express whatever feelings you need to.

    I'm not a parent myself, but there are some very kind, generous ones here who I'm sure will be glad to help you out. Tales from other people who've been through the same thing are the best comfort and advice of all, and I hope you find the forum as welcoming and helpful as I have.
