continuing healthcare transport costs

Hi. I am new to this but wondered if anyone could help. My 20 year old son is severely autistic and goes to daycare 5 days a week which is a 45 minute drive away. He was social care funded (including transport) but was reviewed and found to have a primary health need so is now funded by health. They have agreed his needs but the CCG are not willing to pay for his transport costs. They will pay for the escort to keep him safe but not the taxi costs. His daycare places are very specialist and there is nowhere nearer. He gets high rate mobility pip which we use towards a car but obv he cannot drive himself. His needs cannot be met unless he can get there. Does anyone have any advise?

  • I'm not sure if this would apply but costs can be reclaimed from NHS for travel to and from hospital appointments as it is deemed a primary health need maybe this might be covered?

  • Hi. I am aware of this but not sure it would apply in this case. The CCG can't meet his needs (outcomes) unless he can get there. Its very expensive but there are no other options. He is very complicated and the consequences of change are unthinkable. His social worker is still managing the packaage payments at present and contracharging the CCG. I understand that "transport" of itself is not a health need but it is necessary in this case to meet his needs. I have read the national framework and they can pay in "exceptional circumstances".
