Wearing nappies in school

My little boy who will be 4 years and 5 months at the start of September will be starting mainstream primary school. I have amother little boy who had just finished Reception class at the same school. The school have been very supportive and helpful and my little boy who has ASD has been given a statement and one to one assistance with a HLTA whom we have met and is fantastic. My only concern is that he will be starting school in nappies as all attempts to potty train have failed. We are going to try again over summer but don't think we will be successful. School do not have any issues with this and a care plan will be in place but I am finding it difficult. Was just looking to hear from other parents/ carers who have had children in mainstream school in nappies and what age they were toilet trained. Thank you, just feel a little lost

  • Hi, I was concerned about the same thing before the summer. My daughter is 4. she is believed to have high functioning asd and was in nappies right up until the summer holidays started. I had managed to get her on the toilet with a toddler seat but not very often and the minute knickers and trouser were on she would wet herself. I resorted to bribing her with her favourite littlest pet shop toys and stickers to get her on the toilet without wetting herself. Then i even managed to get her on the toilet without a trainer seat which she was previously petrified of. I can now even get her into public toilets when we're out with little fuss!! I have had to work constantly with her for 6 weeks though and am proud to say we've had 4 accidents since the beginning of the summer. we are leaving her in nappies for a few weeks at bed time so that we don't rock her confidence while starting her new school and then I will see how she copes at night time.

I hope everything goes well for you all too :)
