Old member but new to the forum with moan about shops

My youngest is now interested in clothes shopping which is quite amazing considering how delayed her social skills ect are. Other than the expected problems of queue's in shops the music levels and lighting in clothes shops is a nightmare. My eldest is very high functioning and bright but he can't cope with the numerous questions you now get asked in the stores, 'do you have a store/loyalty card? can I interest you in one of our special offers? would you like a bag?.......' As he is 13 I should be able to at least send him to the till on his own but I have to step in. I recently tried sending him into a store while I went to one very close by but after 5 calls from him on my mobile I had to go abandon my shopping and go to help him. Are others having these problems? I want my children to be as independent as possible but clearly the retail industry is not prepared, yes they have made their stores wheelchair friendly to meet the needs of the physically disabled but have given little thought to their customers on the Autistic spectrum! If we all start to tell retailers of the problems we experience in stores then may be they will change things.

  • Another bug bear with shops is the music and some shops have it up too loud. That causes me probablems of the AS and Autistic variety (and also for my twins if they are with me and they are more noise sensitive than me) and with my hearing (I also have a 40db hearing loss in both ears). Add to that flashing light bulbs that need changing but it takes them ages to replace (I have problems with flashing lights and flashing lights agrivate my AS/ADHD son's hyperactivity) and add crowds to the list of problems and shops can become a nightmare to visit. I much prefer a nice quiet book shop if I am going to go shopping.

  • I actually had to speak to a manager at our local supermarket last weekend. I wish the checkout assistants would stop packing my shopping for me - it's not helpful in the slightest! Ask, if I say no, then leave it. Don't ignore me and pack it anyway. I had to sit in the car for 5 minutes before I was in a fit stae to drive home, but because I look calm and serene on the outside noone knows how I'm feeling inside.
