ASD Son refusing to go to school

Hi All,

Hope you are all having a great New Year. I'm seeking advice about my son and his refusal to attend school. Back in September he was placed in a Special Needs school around 20 miles from where we live so is transported by county. However, most days he refuses to go in. On average he attends maybe 2 or 3 days a week at best.

Every morning is a battle to convince him to go. He says he doesn't like the school yet on the days he does attend he always comes in with enthusiasm and tells me all about his day so when he does attend he seems to enjoy his day. As a Special Needs school they are understanding that some kids will have meltdowns and refuse to attend but it is now becoming a regular issue. He also uses school as leverage to get what he wants. For example, he wanted to buy an accessory for his xbox recently but as it was an expensive item of course I had to say no, at that point he then said "then I'm not going to school until I get it."

Today would have been his first day back after the Christmas holidays. I can understand Thursday is a bizarre day to return to school on especially in the mind of a child with ASD but this is becoming a real issue now. Has anyone else had this experience and if so how did you resolve it? I'd appreciate anyone's input or advice.

With many thanks,

Rae
