Repeating lines from tv programmes

Does/Did anyone's child do this? H (age 5, ASD & Epilepsy) doesn't have conversations with us atall, she just recites lines from kids tv programmes at us when you ask her a question. She doesn't listen to what we are asking or saying and just comes out with the same things over and over.

Hubby reckons she has always been like this but it is getting more and more apparent to me now - whenever anyone comes over she doesn't say hello to them, just spouts another phrase at them. Same when we go to other people's houses or the shops.

It is driving me mad, you can't get through to her atall - hubby says she is happy in herself and it is just one of the things she does but it is so frustrating getting nothing back from her.

Anyone any advice or experience of this?

There's a little bit about echolalia on page 2 - repeating things. You might also get some ideas about how to try and communicate and interact with H.

My son does this too, and over time he learns to adapt the phrases a little so that he can use them. When he gets an interest in a new TV programme his bank of useful phrases widens a bit more.

    Good luck.
