OT really angry

Luke has had his first session of OT today and the therapyst is really angry that the school have not put in place any of the suggestions they have made.

I know the school have had the letter and report for over 6 weeks now but still nothing has been implemented.

I am going to make an appointment with the SENCO to discuss this but if she says there is nothing they can do where do I go from there?

  • Glad to hear you've made some progress there Ming - sounds very positive. Smile

Hi major - if you feel able to, perhaps you could tell us a bit more about your situation and the problems you've been having. It might make it easier for other users to identify with and offer their experiences and ideas.

  • it has taken me 10 years to get nowhere with ot can anyone help?

  • Sandra,

Just to let you know we had a long meeting with the SENCO yesterday and she basically put her hands up and apologised that they should have have been doing things and they weren't.  She asked is we could start afresh and they would get things done from now on.

She did say that it was hard with Luke as her did not present badly at school.  The SENCO was Luke's class teacher in year 1 and she told us although she thought he was a bit quirky and was worried about his fixations she had never considered he had autism.  She was quite shocked when he was dianosed.  We explained to her what a masssive effort it was for him just to keep himself together in school and how 1 bad thing happening during a school day would cause a massive erruption once he gets home.

We have agreed to start afresh with but have always said we will be keeping on top of things.  We have asked if they do not feel Luke needs certain things anymore that they come back to us and we will check with CAMHS and the OT to see if the changes are necessary.

Fingers crossed we have now made some progress and things will get better from now on.

Speaking to the school SENCO is definitely the way forward. I sincerely hope you get this sorted out tomorrow Ming, when you've got time to have a full conversation. Please do let us know how you get on. If you're still not happy I'm sure some of our users will have some advice for you.
You could also get in touch with the Education Rights Service:

     http://www.autism.org.uk/educationrights

They'll be able to talk to you about your situation and advise you what Luke is entitled to.
    Good luck tomorrow.

  • Hi The Major,

Sorry you have waited so long for OT.  To be honest we waited nearly 18 months for the appointment.  We had to go through an assessment with CAMHS and got the OT on their recommendation.  Because Luke had suspected ASD the normal OT did not want to see him until the OT with experience of ASD had seen him.  Please stay patient and keep chasing your appointment.

  • i have been waiting for ot for a very long time not saying how long but when they can to see me when i was young they just told my mum what she already know i am very angery it has taken this long

    thanks for opening this topic

Thank you Sandra.  It looks like the SENCO will not be getting back to me for a few days now but it seems that cost is the main reason they are not supply the help Luke needs.

I will give the Educational Rights Service a try.  Thanks for the link.

  • Thank you.

It gets worse, my husband had a quick word with the SENCO when he took Luke back to school.  Basically she said that one of the pieces of equipment cost £30 and they only had 2 in the school and that Luke was probably lying about the other things not being implemented.

Basically the OT has said that he needs work typed out and put in front of him instead of trying to write from the board.  He needs a wiggle seat as she said he needs to move to concentrate and l needs to have special pens to write with and also needs to learn to touch type so he needs a computer.

I can't believe that they would deny him something for the sake of £30.  My husband told her that if they had informed us we would have bought it ourselves.  He is fuming right now.  He has asked her to get back to him before his next OT appointment next Wednesday.

I really need to find out what I can do if the school refuse to give Luke the help and equipment he needs.

  • Oh Ming,

Thats awful, I didn't want to read and run, although I'm not sure what I can say. Hopefully the meeting with the SENCO will help, maybe ask Luke's teacher to attend too?

I hope you get a good result.

    Emma.
