HFA/Aspergers Colleges

Hi, I'm new here, please can anyone help?

My young man is due to leave mainstream school next year, he has been in an ASD Designated Provision all through his education. However, I'm not altogether sure it has suited him, there have been no great academic steps, social interaction has actually reduced etc. The emphasis I know will be to put him into mainstream again for post 16 provision and I also know I will have to prove that the local colleges can't provide for him.

I am therefore attempting to look further afield than the North West where we live and if necessary, we will move, as I am only looking for a day placement.

Would anyone be able to recommend colleges they know of that are specifically for ASD students? I just feel that he needs a couple of years in an environment where he is understood and where he can be himself and where he can actually have 'friends' - none of which he has at present but then if you asked him, he would say he doesn't want any, he doesn't see the point of friendship. I'm not too concerned about the academic side, I just want somewhere he can have activities and enjoy himself, if he achieves academically at the same time, well that would be a bonus. For me, academic can come later if it needs to.

I am willing to consider anywhere in the country although I guess nearer the North West would be better because all my family are here.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

  • Thanks Colin-Cat and Zoe. I'll look up the one in Yorkshire. Yes, we have looked at Wargrave, that is a possibility but I believe it is quite hard to get funding for. That's the bit I get confused with because Wargrave told us that the LEA give the funding but when we have approached other colleges, they tell us it's not about funding, it's whether or not you are granted a place, we don't seem to get the same story wherever we go.

BTW Zoe, were you elected to stand for the NAS? I think I voted for you in the last election.
