New mum here, would like some advice please xx

Hi everyone,

I am new on this board and hope you dont mind me posting first time with a question?

My son is 6.5 and is currently being assessed by CAMHS. He has been under their care for over a year and he has attachement disorder, SPD and suspected ASD (Cognitive assessment on monday and ADOS soon after)

I would really like some advice on how to handle his violent/aggressive behaviour please.

He can become like this for many reasons - He doesnt understand a situation, can't explain something to you, doesnt want to leave or stop doing something (even with warnings), doesnt want to go to the toilet..... list goes on.

I find his behaviour really hard to deal with as most of it is directed at me :( I really just wanted to ask how people handle their children when they are going through a similiar situation. Should I ignore the behaviour, tell him off? I know I shouldnt get cross, but its so hard to stay calm when he is being so angry.

Any advice very welcome, thank you xxx

  • Hi, I've had the same problem on and off for years. I found that using the TEACCH timetable system and PECS have helped enormously. If you have access to a speech therapist they should be able to help with setting these up. I also verbally count down the time left in an activity and this helps.  There have been many times I've ended up sitting on the stairs crying but talking helps. Removing yourself (if possible) can help as your continued presence can prolong the episode. Finally just remember your son wouldn't hit you if he didn't love you.
