Vow of silence!?

Ok so I thought we'd seen everything in 5 years of living with our Aspergers child (diagnosed 5 years ago, now nearly 16 years old).

Our son never describes or discusses his emotions in any depth, so we always have to guess. But recently the arguments and meltdown events have escalated. We think this might be down to exams coming up at school after half term.

Last Sunday he had a big meltdown in the afternoon. He then said he was so fed with arguing with us, he was just going to stop talking to us. And that's exactly what happened. He had not spoken at all for 7 days, although he still speaks at school apparently. Not much, but at least some; he never speaks much at school when is anxious.

We've never had this before, just not speaking at all. It's making family life more peaceful, admittedly, but also It's making it difficult to communicate, or go out, or do anything.  Can anyone suggest anything?
