Coughing - Can anyone help?

Hi can anybody give me advice about strategies to help my 5 year old son with coughing.  When anyone coughs he will hold his ears and is desperate to get away from the person or the situation he is in.  He shouts out (still holding his ears) as if to drown out any other coughing noises.  It is now starting to effect our everyday life because no matter how i try to calm him he just wants to get away and then will not return to the place or near the person who coughed.

  • Hi there,

There are special programs which help with hearing sensitivity.. You might call a local institute which is specialized in hearing disorders (for they also know a lót about auditory problems along that line!). They might help out with a program, de-sensitizing him thru hearing several sounds, or helping him with an earpiece, demping/lesstening certiain frequencies or sth..

The problem with coughing.. it happens a lot, from just about any side. For him it is more or les like being shot at! Really!! A cough is also a white-noise sound, all frequencies at once.. so which frequency alarms him is still unknown, or if it is the suddenness of the sound.. (does he display this also with sneezing?!)

What he undergoes when he hears a cough, is also like being next to a giant box set to max.. right into his ears.. I'd be running toot than!! I can understand that he shíes away too, for at any moment that noise might go off again! People tend to cough.. a lot! Poor boy..

    Good Luck!!
