The first BBC programmes about Asperger Syndrome

I had a search through BBC Genome

QED: I'm Not Stupid - BBC 1 - 25 April 1995

Watchdog Healthcheck - BBC 1 - 2 February 1998

Holby City - BBC 1 - 20 January 2000. This was the first entertainment programme involving a person with AS.

Woman's Hour - Radio 4 - 25 July 1995

Rana and Atexander - Radio 4 - 25 July 1998

It's My Story: Different for a Reason - Radio 4 - 23 April 2001

It appears that the BBC has only known about AS since 1995 and there are only four programmes from the 1990s.

Parents
  • Well until about the eighties very few people even knew what autism was, and those psychologists that did know were few in number also.

Keep in mind as well that psychological and any other scientific literature is usually well in advance of not only public understanding, but also public comprehension.

Consider for intance that understanding the English language is one thing  - such as learning to say mum, and learning to say dad, but comprehension is still quite another thing - as it entails knowing that the individual called 'Mum' is the individual that 'is' Mum. and not Dad, nor anyone or anything else.

So until there was a comprehensive understanding of Autism by enough psychologists, the BBC was not in position to report on the matter until it did.
