aspergers

HI I am looking for any help and information. I think my partner may have Aspergers. I am totally unsure as to how to help him if this is the case. I have tried ringing the helpline but cannot get through. A younger member of his family is diagnosed with Aspergers. A friend believes that two of my partners siblings could have Aspergers. I have looked at various things on line about Aspergers, and can see various possible similarities in their characteristics. With my partner there are two other factors, an extremely difficult childhood with abuse and dealing with a sensory condition. I am very worried and need help. thank you

  • Hi lolliemay,

I'm sorry to hear you can't get through to the helpline, I'll try to find out if there's a problem for you.

In the meantime, you might want to read some of our information, for example on the Diagnosis for Adults section of the site - www.autism.org.uk/.../adults.aspx - which will tell you how to go about getting an adult diagnosis for your partner. Ultimately, although someone might show signs and characteristics of having ASD, to get a diagnosis you'll need to be referred to an autism specialist, which requires making an appointment with your GP first and getting a referral. You can find more about that at the link on the site. I hope that's of some help.
