Financing interests.

I'm beginning to panic about this winter for various reasons but mainly for filling my time. I have loads of interests that are outdoor based gardening, walking, bird watching, chicken keeping, dogs etc but I can't spend so much time outside in the cold. I'm quite cold intolerant and getting more so as I age. So after having lost my job of 9 years and now finding myself on benefits I don't have the means to participate in my usual winter obsessions, diy, rug making, sewing, crafts etc. I need cheap or free ideas people? I can't think of anything that won't involve spending cash I don't have. Ideas anyone? I don't do so well without something to focus on.

Thanks for reading.

  • TV kicence or the "Peadophile Tax"  as I call it, the BBC knew about the antics of Savile and others abd did NOTHING, so I refuse to pay it . Have been watching catch up, tho since BBC i-player has gune licence only I haven't missed it. I do seem to find many DVDs in charity shops, especially railway ones, and I find youtube has many videos and I can watch so many things on there, I feel little need for a TV.

  • I have recently stumbled upon Chess.

A friend asked me to go to a five week introduction. I only went because she a friend. I didn't expect to enjoy it at all.

First week, I loved it. Come home and bought LCD electronic chess as no one at home to play against. Beginners to tornament. First of all I am working out how the machine works.

But am aware of the frustration. It isn't just financing it. It the finding out what can do through the winter that I enjoy when home alone.

Another for me is that my cat died back in April. A good 'friend' told me to get another the other month. I took his advice and now have a playful kitten to help me through the winter

    (am too on benefits)

  • I always found the local library a good place to go.  Lots of books to look at on any subject you like, warm, and you don't have to speak to anyone and no one bothers you.  My local library has free wi fi as well as computers to use.  And you could then research all the interests you are interested in, make notes, write your own almanac/journal/reference book.  And all at very little cost (just teh cost of paper and pencils/pens to write up your research). You could also get ideas for crafts/rug making patterns/sewing/diy.

My life has been full of my good ideas that I have sketched out in words or diagrams, imagined them completed and left them at that.  At least that way they are perfect!

  • Hi

If you can get out & don't mind people, there's browsing charity shops.

I'm on benefits & can't afford to do anything. I can't even afford a TV licence. The only luxury I have is the internet & my cheap tiny laptop. As I need it to communicate & buy groceries. I have to be careful though as it's so easy to buy things.

I make the most of my laptop. I use it to research & get material for home educating my daughter. And we use it to watch youtube & catch up tv (excluding bbc iplayer) there are so many free programs. My daughter also uses the internet with many of her wii-u games.
