Gambling - help, turn into something else

Hello, my friend has Aspergers. He started gambling quite a long time ago, however this has gone out of control lately, because he has been borrowing too much money. I was just wondering if someone would have any ideas I could recommend for him to try, instead of gambling. I was wondering if would it be possible to shift the things he likes in gambling into another activity.

He likes that he is completely focused on one thing, the adrenalin rush, the understandong of the features of different websites and the details of the game.

Does someone have any ideas that might be benefitial for him?

thank you

  • there's chess. blitz, fast, tournament... it's intense, focused, stress. walter brown, us chess champion and one of the greats (died a couple years ago) made his living gambling... i know he frequented card rooms, etc. some other chess guys love gambling. so there's a connection between those addictions. some get addicted to chess.

  • I'm trying to get my dad into video games. Especially a PS1 emulator on a raspberry pi single board computer. He gambles every single day. Video games work well for my son and I, but my dad is too old to be into them (all 3 of us are on the spectrum, but my dad is in denial because he refuses to get diagnosed like my son and I). I'd rather him sink time into playing the old Resident Evil games than to sink another million dollars over the next 10 years. That's literally how much he has spent gambling. I maybe spent $300k on drugs, but at least I sold them to get my money back and then some! I almost wish he was addicted to heroin like I used to be, at least it's something I can understand. There's literally no such thing as gambling withdrawal. There's no medication to help him with this like there was for me. He thinks (because he's a retired cop) that his addiction is ok because it's legal, but it's costing him way more money and is going to ruin his life.
