Another nightmare work event

Just back from our yearly work event in Scotland this time, last year's was a nightmare. I spent a lot of time talking to hr asking for changes which I felt were reasonable. To be excused from team building events and for the big dinner with loud music and flashing lights. I agreed to go this year, expecting the changes. I was co-erced in to going to the dinner and team events. I couldn't drop out because tickets were already paid for; if I had of know the changes I asked for would not be possible, I wouldn't have gone.

I got back Friday night, and on Saturday morning I have been ill with a bad flu/cold; I am sure that was caused by the event zapping every last bit of energy out of me, then 3 hours team building tasks out in the cold before we travelled home. I have had this intense headache I can't shift. On top of that have used up all my sickness allowance, so worried about finances which were already stretched.

  • Thanks for the replies, I have only told HR and senior management about my aspergers. I described in great detail the problems I had with last year's event, I was encouraged as they actually suggested a couple of things which would help. This same person is the main organiser of the event. I did ask for these changes for my disability. which included to be excluded from the team building and the big glitzy dinner.

They did keep their word on one small change, but some of the most critical have been just washed aside. The team building one, I tried to avoid; they added a condition that if you didn't partake in the team building, the employee would have to pay for their food. That's a condition that had not been included for previous events. It was a really posh 5 star resort, in some restaurants a single meal would be over £100.

With finances being as they are I could not afford it. Usually I would skip the meal, but travel arrangements were to return in the afternoon, as everyone is itching to get back home, they don't stop for something to eat.

As I had used all my sickness allowance up, I email my line manager last night, asking if I could work from home (regularly do that with no problem), and if I am not well enough to work, I would let them know and ask to use up my holiday entitlement which I have a lot to use up by December. I thought that was reasonable, but no, I was told I either take day sick or I should come in to the office.

I had to come in to the office, I am feeling better than I did Yesterday; it would have been much better If I could have worked from home.

when I was pressured to come for the dinner, the response implied that I was being unsociable.

Have been let down with other changes, I asked for my desk to be replaced (long story OCD related). At the time, new desks were being ordered for new employees. I asked for my desk to be swapped with one of the new ones. I was told that wasn't possible, I even offered to swap it myself out of office hours.

  • Hi Random,

Sounds like you had a weekend of sensory overload. Hope the cold/flu doesn't stick around to long.

Funny how some think team building exercises help you gel with coworkers.

It should be enough to just treat others with respect. Plus do your job properly.

Some people are really bad listeners.  Square pegs & round hole scenario.

Don't they understand your fully aware of what causes you stress ?

    Take care
