Communication

Hi there,

My daughter Lucy who is 5 1/2 years old has been diagnosed with being on the autism spectrum. She struggles with routine, transition and small changes. At school they use PECS time tables to help her as she is very anxious. I am wanting to start using symbols at home for daily routines, timetables etc. I have looked at Widgit Online, Boardmaker Online and View2Do. Im just wondering your thoughts and if anyone has used any of these?

Thanks

  • Hello there,

There are some great packages etc BUT also very easy to do some cheap & cheerful homemade visuals. Stickmen from internet pics or pictures of logos for the weekend routines (Tesco, the shoe shop, the restaurant etc) can be copied & pasted onto her favourite character timetable for free. Hand drawn stickmen, stickers etc

When little we used downloaded internet pics of her favourite characters & put them on a timetable & now older (10) we use a wipeable board & simply write her next task or event on it.

I bought some friendly cartoon facial expressions from ebay on a little card keyring so she could express her emotions when anxiety or upset was just starting & an emotions chart where she could just point on the scale (almost like a volcano heating up or a green to red scale etc).

For school we had a transition passport - made up of photos of her new class, new teacher, new peers, new dining room etc & did a similar thing for our holidays with a picture of the accommodation etc. Sometimes homemade or cutout or hand drawn can be more flexible.

     Hope that helps, Best wishes
