Any way we can use our own Avatars instead of standard site ones?

Totes agree with this requirement. People with autism or Asperger's (like me) like to express themselves :)
More in-depth profiles which are less about giving our physical addresses away (dangerous!) and more about showing people what we're like, what we do (custom styling, links to our creative and / or technical works) would also be sweet.
Apart from it being our own thing, I think it's important that everyone else has their own thing too: I seem to identify people more by avatar than name (a common complaint of mine is "this book doesn't have enough pictures in it!"; I like visual things) so it gets confusing when I see one of the few stock avatars being reused. I tend to assume that it's the same person and sometimes don't realise for quite some time, usually after someone says something apparently out of character: it doesn't get much more out of character than actually being a different person entirely.

Bob C (or any moderator) - when the software comes into operation, would be be permissable to use a picture from the 'net as an avatar, as long as it's in the public domain?
Thanks.
This was my thought also. I think it would be a way of expressing ourselves if we wished too

The forum software is due to be replaced in the coming months. I suspect that the new forum software may well allow you to have your own avatar.
