DLA Guilt/Indecision

I keep going back & forth on it, have downloaded forms & guides etc. My son is undiagnosed, unlikely to be assessed for a few years yet. He starts mainstream school in Sep but doesn't seem that much more work than any other kids his age.

I also thought we may be better waiting until he's in school as its so close to hols & more support services will be involved then. Autism outreach, specialist salt, inclusion support & hopefully ehcp.

Would we be better waiting? We're not desperate for money and I doubt he'll get it. It'd be nice to save for him just in case tho.

  • In England PIP is only for adults. I realise DLA isn't based on diagnosis but care needs, even then it also seems to depend on who deals with your case etc.

I'm going towards waiting to see how he is when he's in school as it's quite a change from pre school.

DLA has been replaced with PIP (in England, not sure about Scotland) but he may not qualify even if he has a full diagnosis.

I was diagnosed 2 years ago after spending most of my life in ignorance of the condition. I have been employed for most of that time and went through education with no issues but it would have been easier at various points to know that I was different. I don't need benefits but I have used the "Access to Work" scheme. Autism is a spectrum condition and some people manage fairly well but some people need constant support and are incapable of work etc. The benefit system tries to reflect that by giving support to those who most need it.
