Hi everyone,
We recently recieved a decision on DLA for our 5 year old son and were awarded high rate for care and low rate for mobility.
From reading numurous websites we think that our son is eligible for high rate mobility due to severe mental impairment. We asked for a mandatory reconsideration and provided a list of reasons to be considered. We received their response today that they will not be changing the decision.
Our son has no communication or social interaction skills. He has zero danger awareness whatsoever and needs to be accompanied at all times (and restrained whilst outdoors) He will often have meltdowns whilst outdoors and will regularly refuse to walk any further, becoming distressed - hitting out, screaming, dropping to the ground, trying to run into the road etc. Up to now the only way to get him moving again is to carry him whilst he continues to hit out and scream. This is now getting increasingly difficult as he get a lot bigger and heavier to carry.
Does anyone have experience of similar claims? Is it worth appealing the decision or is it unlikely to change now after the reconsideration has been rejected?
Many thanks
