Stop these 'Captcha' things please!

OK, I know it was me who made the big fuss about the spammers who were spoiling this forum a few weeks ago.  And appreciate that the new 'captcha' code thingamy you've introduiced after every attempt to post anythingf (regardless whether one has successfully logged in or not) must be intended to weed out the spammers.

BUT, it is EXTREMELY annoying to have to run the gauntlet of typing vague and ambiguous characters into a 'box' before knowing whether one has wasted one's ime completely or not.

Please look at other forums. There are plenty that seem to work successfully 99.9% of the time without resoprting to this ridiculous palaver.

Thank and good night.  I'll be back when you've sorted this. (I can;t be arsed going back to check for typos - I'm sure there are several, if not many - my apologies to anyone who find this irritating - I know how you feel!)

Presumably the point of the spam is to enable their material to be found by search engines - i.e. the forum is just an unwitting host to content that people will find from google or wherever?

I believe so: an awful lot of it isn't really for the "benefit" of other forum members but is the infamous search engine optimsation nonsense that's often such a headache for most website operators (by which I mean the promotion thereof, rather than actually being usefully searchable).

I doubt that restricting the activities of the targeted search engine would make a great deal of difference as the bots don't really care and are the online equivalent of "being seen to do work".  That's the thing with fake accounts that they're unlikely to be paying for anywhere along the line, there's no incentive not to go with the "more is more" approach.

Another side I moderate has a new users' group where people eventually get moved into a regular users' group that doesn't have the restrictions and annoyances: whilst not absolutely foolproof, it's a system that works pretty well.
