Stop these 'Captcha' things please!

OK, I know it was me who made the big fuss about the spammers who were spoiling this forum a few weeks ago.  And appreciate that the new 'captcha' code thingamy you've introduiced after every attempt to post anythingf (regardless whether one has successfully logged in or not) must be intended to weed out the spammers.

BUT, it is EXTREMELY annoying to have to run the gauntlet of typing vague and ambiguous characters into a 'box' before knowing whether one has wasted one's ime completely or not.

Please look at other forums. There are plenty that seem to work successfully 99.9% of the time without resoprting to this ridiculous palaver.

Thank and good night.  I'll be back when you've sorted this. (I can;t be arsed going back to check for typos - I'm sure there are several, if not many - my apologies to anyone who find this irritating - I know how you feel!)

  • Hi,

I/we really appreciate how annoying the capcha system is. We introduced it reluctantly for this weekend and until we have put some other measures in place. Moderators have been monitoring the site and taking down spam as soon at it is seen. After a quiet weekend (Capcha may be helping) I took some down this morning. We have also recruited two more volunteer moderators who will start to boost our responsiveness.

This attack has exposed some weaknesses in the security on the community and we are working with our developers SIFT and spam service MOLLOM to fix these issues. Clearly I can't go into details here.

We will try to get to a point where we can remove CAPCHA today or tomorrow.

Appreciate all members who flagged the problem

In the wider scheme of things I am pushing on (it has taken too long) with the project to upgrade the forum. I hope to be in a position to involve members in that project soon.

    All the best
