going through assesments with my 9 yr old

hi my 9 yr old has been under a peaditritian since he was 2 we have been seen by camhs by 4 different people and still no diagnosis except for verbal dyspraxia. all proffesionals only seemn to see the peach problem. so last month i demanded i wanted a full assesment doing so some one from jess cluster sent a therapist to school to do 3 sessions with my son. she has done 2 and phoned me to say she doesnt want to do another but needs to come talk to me about what she feels she has seen. and although im pleased to be getting some whrere im a little frightened of what she will say when she comes on wednesday. especially has she said camhs isnt the right place i should of been going with my son and that a mental health team maybe more appropriate.

has anyone else been passed to the child mental health team instead of camhs? and what does this mean for my son? im just so tired of trying to get somewhere for my son and bieng blamed for bieng a nurotic mum for the last 6/7 yrs i hope these assessments dont come back the same. thankyou for listening and any info would be appreciated

  • thankyou sam and hopefuly will get answers and finaly have a forward direction to go in. all i want if for my son to be happy and then me and my youngest son will also be happy.

  • hi,

Its an on going debate as to should ASD be classed as a mental health issue, leading to confusion as to what services are available for support.

In my case my son was diagnosed by a ASD specialist psychiatrist and so I would class that as coming under mental health and as far as I understood it CAMHS was child and adolesence mental health services anyway.

So i dont understand why they are passing you onto someone else as it sounds like the same thing to me. I know that CAMHS cover a wide remit of issues and if he has been assesed at school and they feel a more specialised approach is the best way to go then that should be a good thing if they help and you finaly get some answers then its all for the best. Good luck with everything.

    Sam
