services you would like to see

Hi everyone

I work for a charity and I am looking to develop a service in the Wiltshire area. To do this it would be great to know what sort of services for pasttimes and activities people who live in that area require so we can plan to meet that need.

Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

  • Yes, that's a very good point, Jam_1.  I've heard quite a few autistic people say that they find socialising easier when they share an activity or collective goal with people rather than situations which are about the socialisation only.  I'm definitely that way myself.

  • Personally, I would really appreciate simply having somewhere to socialise that is free from bright lighting, loud background music and distracting TV screens.  I like socialising with people in moderation, but I find so few social environments where my ability to hold a conversation isn't hampered by having my senses constantly bombarded with distractions.

I would also consider choosing a venue that can offer you a second, smaller space to act as a 'refuge' for anyone who needs time out due to sensory or emotional overload.  I am always far more comfortable in a situation when I know that I can escape it quickly should I become overwhelmed.

Best of luck with your new service - I'm sure it will be much apprecaited by the people who join you!

  • I could suggest a service, but I don't know if it's what your looking for.

You might do well to talk to the people at www.awp.nhs.uk/.../ who provide services for people in the Bristol area. There may be a similar centre in Wiltshire.
