Medical Examination.

Hello,i recently had to take my 4 year old grandson up to the A&E dept,my grandson has non verbal autism,he was quite poorly, high tempature,it was so upsetting for his mum and myself,we litererally had to pin him down to enable the doctor to give him an examination, the stress on my grandson was heartbreaking to watch, surely there must be policies or procedures put in place at hospitals to examine and treat children with autism,it turned out he had a severe throat and ear infection, trying to get any medication into him was impossible, after trying oral antibiotics, which he vomited back,we found out that he could have had antibiotic injection, which was a one of dose,i dont understand why this was not offered at the time, there has got to be another way of examining and treating children with autism, without having to cause so much stress for them, any advice or help would really be appreciated.Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your reply,my grandson is a lot better now thank you,i understand any child with or without autism will be stressed at any attempt to examine them, but with children who havent got autism, there is a chance you can try and reason with them, and make the child understand what is happening and why,my grandson has very very limited understanding of what is happening around him, because of this it was very difficult for the DR to get near enough to him to give him a thorough medical, what worries me so much,is that how do we know that Doctor could have missed something serious or my grandson was misdiagnosed, its so scary, nobody, not nurses or Doctors came up to us with any suggestions as to what to do to be able to examine him thoroughly,we even asked if it would be possible to sedate my grandson, which isnt good but what else could we do,this is what my orignal question was, there has got to be other people and families out there that must have experienced this.
