Medical Examination.

Hello,i recently had to take my 4 year old grandson up to the A&E dept,my grandson has non verbal autism,he was quite poorly, high tempature,it was so upsetting for his mum and myself,we litererally had to pin him down to enable the doctor to give him an examination, the stress on my grandson was heartbreaking to watch, surely there must be policies or procedures put in place at hospitals to examine and treat children with autism,it turned out he had a severe throat and ear infection, trying to get any medication into him was impossible, after trying oral antibiotics, which he vomited back,we found out that he could have had antibiotic injection, which was a one of dose,i dont understand why this was not offered at the time, there has got to be another way of examining and treating children with autism, without having to cause so much stress for them, any advice or help would really be appreciated.Thank you.

  • Some children and adults likewise with Autism can take oral antibiotics.  I don't know enough really but sure it not the autism which effects how they react to certain forms of medicine. When we are poorly enough we will throw up the oral antibiotic anyways until they give it us interaveneous. Having had both kinds as being severely ill once. Am sure others will reply especially if this is incorrect as such.  But am sure it has nothing to do with Autism which form we respond to the best. I don't know how he was examined to know if there was a better way but when we are very poorly we don't lie still anyway. Ha my mum told me that the time I was very ill I was having fits to do a marathon runner proud and the doctor had to physically sit on me to hold me down enough to get the line in. Naturally I don't remember a thing of that apart from the affects of it all afterwards.  Sorry you had a bad time at the hospital and hope the grandson is okay now.
