Preschool children? What works best with them?

Hi there I was hoping for a little advice,

As a nursery practitioner I am a key person for a girl of 26 months. She has been exhibiting lots of indicators of being on the spectrum and her Mum has got round to getting a referral for SLT. I feel a diagnosis is on the way.

I would like to help her in any way I can in the meantime, focusing on communication, boundaries, stuff like that. Are there any practices or techniques which anyone has used with their preschooler/toddler to help them out?

Thanks!

  • I got diagnosed when I was 5. Until then, I did not get any support. The best thing I suggest is to fight really hard for a diagnosis for this girl. Its hard to see sometimes what support is needed for a children not on the spectrum differ greatly.

As severity of ASD varies significantly it may be that she may only need a bit of help with basic communication such as eye contact and knowing when to talk. However if its severe she would need more help.
