I just wanted to share something positive. And there's an aspect of ASD in this, too.
I recently completed the Couch to 5K running programme!
It's a running programme for beginners, and I was certainly one of those, having barely ran much at all for many, many years. I did the NHS Choices one, which can be found on the NHS website in the Live Well section.
A few months ago, I was used to brisk walking for exercise, but certainly wasn't a runner, and didn't imagine I ever would be one. But I thought I'd give Couch to 5K a try, just to see how far I got with it, and to benefit from that bit of extra exercise. I thought I'd get a few weeks or so into it, and that would be as far as I'd get. But I've recently completed week nine, the final week. And I'm now running three times a week!
At first, when doing the first 'run' (mostly walking) of week one, I was finding it a bit difficult at the end of each of the sixty second runs (with ninety seconds of walking in between). I think there were eight such runs in each 'run', making eight minutes of running in total, three times for the first week. It really didn't seem like I'd be able to run a whole five kilometers a few months later. I just wondered how far I'd get.
But I managed that first week, and the second, and the third, and kept going. I didn't always manage three 'runs' in an actual week, and sometimes I needed to redo a run. So, although it's a nine week course, it took me a few extra weeks.
But recently, just in the last few weeks, I finally completed the week nine run for the third time, and am now repeating it three times a week!
It's thirty minutes per run, about (or nearly) five kilometers (a bit over three miles), three times a week, making ninety minutes of reasonably brisk exercise per week - just a bit more than is recommended as a minimum level of cardiovascular exercise. And I'm still walking briskly for exercise as well.
And one of the biggest surprises is that I'm actually enjoying it! I never really expected that! I'm starting to occasionally run a few minutes extra, and have just managed thirty-five minutes without feeling the need to stop, simply because I wanted to carry on running. (But I did stop after the extra five minutes, as I don't want to overdo it, and it was time to go home.)
But I don't wear any special running gear. I've got sort of suitable footwear that I wear anyway, and I just run in my usual clothes, which is what I'm used to. It probably looks a bit odd to those who see me running, when I'm wearing non-running clothing, but I don't care. I just prefer to wear what I'm used to, rather than have to deal with clothing I'm not used to. Obviously, that's the ASD bit.
Anyway, I just wanted to share that. And if it encourages anyone else to give it a try, that would be great.
