TV .

Is it just me or does anyone else find TV adverts unbearable ? I'm not sure if it's an aspie thing or if it's a more general feeling but I cannot abide most tv adverts. The way they are directed at certain types of people (mostly people who don't think for themselves) and spoken in the most ridiculas accents with rising inflections at the end of each sentance. They presume that we are all a bit thick and will be impressed by their stupid presentation. I know companies have to advertise things in order to sell them but do they need to be so over patronising about it ? I have got to the stage now that I turn off the volume on the tv when the adverts come on otherwise I get so annoyed.  Does anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

  • It depends on the commerical but I sometimes feel this way.

  • I wonder, does anyone actually like adverts besides those that make/write them (or potentially media types?

It is interesting to observe them from a design perspective, for example if you listen to a television voice over or radio advertisement, you can 'hear' that the speaker is smiling (try it yourself and you'll see that you voice is different). I'm not sure what the purpose of this is in most contexts and it seems a little pointless, especially in food advertising.

I think more frustrating are similar kinds of items in news programmes. So far, the ITV morning news is, to my knowledge, the most common offender in this (although I imagine satellite/global news is far worse); the slow zooming in (and potentially sinister music overlay) of portraits of potential or convicted criminals.

  • I like them. hmmn not the advert itself but it does allow me to go to the toilet, or make a drink or a snack without missing the programme

  • cannot abide adverts.  i am quite happy to pay the license fee, just so i dont get adverts.

i am a big fan of the mute button.  i think, at this time of year are the stupid perfume commercials.

do people pay attention to them, do they work?  they must do, just not on me.

  • Don't have a TV anymore - best decision I made in ages.  You can watch shows on catch-up (Channel 4 still has adverts, but they're easily muted), or get a netflix sub - dirt cheap really.

  • I totally agree too about adverts, and likewise programme trailers.  Although Channel 4 content is usually more palatable than some other channels, I've noticed a trailer recently which is just a barrage of loud music and a very "shouty" voice telling us about the programme (I can't remember what programme was being promoted).  I had to quickly turn the volume down on the TV as it felt like an assault on the ears.

Doubtless it was done in this style to sound "fresh" or "current" and fashionable, but I can't imagine even the average NT viewer would necessarily find it any easier to comprehend.

  • I can't abide adverts, usually turn down the sound when they are on. Rarely watch films on TV as I can't stand the constant interruption. And if I am with someone who channel-hops during the ads it can rouse me to fury!

  • But is any one that gullible. I dont know of any body who has  fallen for the advertisers trap. Having said that I do turn off the volume - just in case.

  • Advertising amuses me a little. We are suposed to be the gullible ones, believing what we hear and taking things litterally, but we can so clearly see through advertising and have the sense to switch off and so protect ourselves from the subliminal elements.

It used to be said that those with a disability had a compensating strength; Those on the high functioning end of the spectrum, appear to have enhanced intelligence and logic to make up for the deficiencies in connectivity within our brain.

I agree too about the news. It seams to be more and more "Drop the Dead Donkey", if you remember that old Channel IV series.

  • I completely agree, and I do the same during adverts. They are usually at the intellectual level of a moron, the blatant manipulation makes me heave, and I'm incredulous that people are so gullible that they fall under their spell. And yes, BBC too, even the news seems to be a modern day version of Newsround. They use the same methods of manipulating the public emotions, they are very good at insinuating, and I think of them now as George Orwell's Ministry of Truth.

You are clearly intelligent and therefore immune. But you're right, they're an insult beneath contempt! Usually, by the time you've worked through the flashing lights and shouty stuff, the only facts you can glean about the product is that it exists, and therefore is overpriced because they're paying for insulting adverts out of their profits.

Humanity Sapiens, bless them, they know not what they do...

  • I quite agree. Occasionally there is a good one, but generally they are annoying. I often use the TV mute button, make a cuppa, do a bit of a crossword and resume watching when the program restarts. Even BBC is not safe, with long boring trailers for programs I do not want to watch. The alternative is to record the program and fast forward the adverts. You are probably just more intelligent than the target audience. Smile
