Will our children have autism? X

Hello, I am new to this site. I have been guided here by my partners family due to the fact that both his brother and sister have autism although in completely different ways. I am not very educated on this as I have never had first hand experience with anyone with autism but am loving getting to know all members of his family and amazed by the beauty within his siblings. However we have recently been discuccing having children ourselves and I would really like to know what the chances are of us having a child with autism. Although this would not deter me I feel that having 2 children already it ismy responsibility to research as much as I can and prepare myself if need be. I have read lots on the genetics of autism but cant seem to find any solid research or feedback from people who have been through this. So I would greatly appreciate your help please.

If my partner has 2 autistic siblings but I have none in my family, what are the chances that our children with be autistic also?

Many thanks and warm blessings. X x

  • I feel that genetics play a big part. Relatives on my maternal side have autism. My two brothers are autistic and my four year old son is autistic. My three year old has aspergers and I'm due to give birth in 19 days so we're wondering how this one will develope.

  • Hi.  I have an 8 year old son with autism and my sister has a 7 year old son with autism.  My son is high functioning and my sister's son is low functioning.  I have a brother who has 3 children (1 boy and 2 girls) who do not have autism.  Every family is different, but certainly in my family I can see signs of it on my dad's side.  There is evidence to suggest that it is genetic, but there is also evidence that there are other factors involved.  Research has been done into fraternal and idential twins which is interesting.  I had an IVF pregnancy and have even wondered if that played a part.  I only have one child.  Whatever you decide I wish you well. x

  • Hiya :)

This is kinda the problem with Autism. There's evidence to suggest it may be genetic (my little cousin on my dads side has a different kind of autism to me but nethertheless, two in one large family), but some people believe its not only genetic, but in the way we grow and learn, so kind of like a personality. Fraid to say there isn't really a guarantee. I have a younger sister who (though I find weird and annoying) doesn't have ASD, and my cousin with ASD has four elder siblings who don't have it either.

I've recently got two half-brothers on dads side (parents are divorced he's remarried) so if they start showing signs I'll let you know. I'm a girl by the way. xD

But also, in theory boys are more likely to have autism, although there's some evidence to suggest that girls may have it, just with different symptoms.

    Hope this helps.
