Does anyone else's cherub have separate diagnoses?

Our seven year old had sensory processing disorder and mild autism, does anyone have spd therapy tips? Also how can I help her make connections with her traits and environments? I know when her mood changes because of sensory overload or her asd but she doesn't make the connection. She also uses a chewy and is using it more each day, is it a sign of something or just out of habit

Thank you in advance xx

  • Hi, thank you for your reply. I think she does use it to help with stressors when she is out and about but we just talked to her about using it at home. We asked is she chewing cause it is there or is she worried. She took it off straight away and is now sat watcheing TV. I am going to keep an eye on her because normally when she is getting over stimulated her fingers start going in her mouth.

    Thanks again Jayne xx

Do you think the chewy thing is like teeth grinding

    community.autism.org.uk/.../"teeth grinding" ?

It sounds a bit like stimming too?

The chewy could be a sign that she is stressed. It could also be a behaviour that is reinforcing itself as it will be comforting and distracting her away from her stressors. You may be able to distract her and calm her down to reduce her need to chew. Can you interrupt it by talking to her and getting her to talk back to you? Does she do it more in some places (e.g. noisy ones) than others?

A 7yo won't really be able to work things out for herself very well but you can train her to avoid situations that you think will cause her problems.
