Autism and Sensory Perception

My name is Lucy and I am new to here . I just wanted ask whether anyone would be interested in filling in one my questionnaires relating to sensory issues and autism. I am in my final year of my degree and I have chosen as part of my final piece, my dissertation to look into this area. I am personally very interested in this as my sister is autistic and she herself is very sensory but also from a professional side also as I work with a child with ASD during term time and work for a charity working with SEN children and adults during the holidays. I am gathering opinions and views from both parents and professionals to gain a more rounded view on the subject and to see whether professionals and parents have the same outlook and also the differing views of persons working with SEN children in mainstream schools opposed to SEN schools. I would be extremely grateful to anyone who would take the time to fill this in as this is a subject I am very passionate about! Autism is often misunderstood by many and the more research that is done the more we can help and support persons with ASD. Also if there are any individuals with Autism on here who would like to contribute their thoughts that would be fantastic. The questionnaire is aimed at parents/carers as I am on a Childhood education degree, however, to gain the views of older persons who actually can tell the story from their own perspective would be unbelievably valuable so please let me know :)

Thanks again J

  • Undergraduate dissertations do not cover confidentuiality adequately. Your dissertation will be seen by internal and external examiners and may be left lying around during assessment; your dissertation may be openly accessible for a number of years after completion. How will you dispose of your notes?

Information people impart to you might still identify them, or services they used, by the circumstances or context of what is said. In what way was this approach to data gathering ethically approved? Universities are supposed to prevent this.

You should ask permission of the website operator/moderators before posting such requests (see Community Rules). Usually they then flag an enquiry as OK, but usually in a different space.

I understand you feel that you are using your dissertation usefully. But your dissertation is a demonstration of your ability to follow procedures (jumping through all the hoops). There should have been guidelines on how to gather data in which you have confidence in its reliability. Casual respondents to a website are not in themselves adequately controlled. That might affect your dissertation grade.

  • I am sorry you feel like that but I can ensure confidentiality as it annoymous, there are no names, schools, areas mentioned. I understand that this forum is a great resource for seeking advice from others and I offended that you would think that I would take advantage of this. I am one of the people that have previously used this site to gain more information and advice about ASD as I am one of my sisters main carers and I am very passionate about raising awareness of Autism and helping others to better understand and support persons with ASD. If you had looked at the questionnaire it would be clear that the questions are just seeking further information about the subject so that it gives a deeper insight when researching. If I had created a discussion to discuss other peoples experiences of sensory issues I would still have been gaining more information, however, I wanted to make sure that  was gaining information in an ethically approved way and letting people know that I would use the information to build upon in my research. I am sorry that you feel that this is unacceptable as I have received positive feedback from other parent support groups who are supportive of the disseration subject and this is why I posted my questionnaire link in case others may want to contribute their experiences.

  • How can you ensure that data collected for an undergraduate dissertation is confidential and properly disposed of?

Even with codes or aliases, things people say may disclose their identities inadvertantly or disclose confidential informations about services and professionals involved. An undergraduate dissertation cannot make such necessary confidentiality undertakings.

Even so your place of study has ethics guidelines about this kind of data gathering. Have you checked the guidelines and does your dissertation supervisor know how you are going about this.

Forums like this are for people to seek help from others. That's not the same as you using such a forum just to meet the data gathering you require to complete your final degree project.
