Support dogs

Im just wondering how the hell you go about getting a support dog

I have contacted support dogs & have been looking on their website for the pass 3 years & they haven't been taking any new requests

also I have tried dogs for disabled their only take requests from people locally so that ruled us out as we live in sheffield

just thinking its never going to happen as our son is 10 next year

  • Have you looked at PAWS (Dogs for the Disabled)? They operate on a nationwide level.  I don't know the particular challenges that your son faces but we have a high functioning 14 year old who doesn't need a ready trained assistance dog but who suffers from high anxiety levels leading to violent and destructive behaviour. PAWS help you to train your own dog or, indeed to choose the right dog for your autistic child and then they support your entire family and the dog with training advice and as much contact as you need for the life of the dog. We bought a cockapoo puppy last year and I attended PAWS workshops. Since then they have been in regular contact with me and are even creating training exercises for the dog which help with our child's behavioural issues. We are seeing real improvements in his levels of violence and anxiety...plus its helping with his low maturity levels as well as he has a dog to help look after. Best thing we EVER did for our child.
