school anxiety and stress

Hello all

How does everyone cope with school anxiety? Our Dm gets it bad on Sunday and end of school holidays. I try to just let her get it out but wondered is there anyway to help?

Also she gets headaches, says there are lights behind her eyes and her skin gets very itchy/hot? Are these stress signs or do I need to take her to the doctors?

She is seven, she has SPD and mild ASD

Thanks in advanced all xxx

  • Hello

Thank you again for your reply. I have been to our daughters school repeatedly and they tell me they are not able to help her or us because she is fine in school. I will look on here for the support you mentioned. Even parent partnership have told me that the schoo are not breaking any rules by not supporting her.

Thank you again for your support xx

  • Hello! I'm glad she's able to tell you sometimes what's worrying her.  Sorry she doesn't know at other times. I know of a child with aspergers and they have the childcare type assistant, who helps them out with the day to day worry's at school-i think they are called teaching assistants, and should know about developmental dissorders-anxiety being part of it.. Please can you go to your school and ask for help. Are their any local groups for children with aspergers? Could your g.p suggest any groups or any extra support you could have? At the first page of this community, where you log in, on the right hand side in a box, there are also other support networks, as well as this, that has net groups for familys with aspergers/autism, netmums, mumsnet and maybe you could phone the National autistic society helpline, to see what suport she should be getting from school and how to endorse that help. And ask for better lines of commmunication from them about how her day is. Glad she going to the G.p for her itching e.t.c

  • Hello

Thank you loads for your reply. School don't see anything in school n I don't get any ccommunication from them so I don't know from one day to the next if anything has happened. They tell me if her teacher is off but that is all. She sometimes tells me what's worrying her but normally doesn't know herself. We try really hard to stick to routine but every evening isn't the same, I don't know if it should be. I will take her to the doctors and double check on the itchiness etc. I feel lost some days :-(

  • Hi. Re- the headaches, lights, itchyness e.t.c it is possible it is her SPD, but any medical issue should be checked out by a Dr also. And see if their is anything troubling her at school. Ask her teachers if they've noticed anything that maybe upsetting her/stressing her out/causing anxiety. See if their is anything the school can do anything else to support her. Is there a school councellor or something, that can  help come up with coping strategies/find out what exactly is it that is triggering the anxiety: pupils/change in routine/having to be away from home/is she mannaging the school work...

Other things could help, like sticking to routine at home, Not allowing her to watch t.v. before bed, go for walks to get endorphines going to counter react the anxiety, do anything creative/she enjoys that will take her mind off stuff.
